Trigger points are tender, sensitive areas that, when pressed, can be exquisitely painful. You may first discover trigger points then you are surprised by someone pressing a seemingly pain-free area. Trigger point pain may also be referred to other areas of the body. Trigger points are common in chronic muscle spasm, myalgia, myositis, fibrositis, strain and sprain, and other muscle and joint issues.

Stress can cause trigger points. Emotional tension, family or work related stress, can be one cause. Physical stress from activity on the job or an accident or fall is another cause. Ingested chemicals, including prescription or over-the-counter drugs, pollutants and food preservatives can be another reason for trigger points.

Trigger points may cause a newly adjusted bone to move out of alignment more quickly. By learning and using trigger point therapy early in care, your body will respond at an accelerated rate.

Using the hands, gentle pressure is applied to the muscle. When a trigger point is present, it feels as though there is a knot in the muscle. Some patients experience temporary discomfort, but this is followed by a feeling of relief and relaxation. Continued gentle pressure relieves the Trigger Point
